  • Supersport to broadcast all Indycar races live in 2018

Between the Le Mans 24 Hours, Formula 1 and the Indy 500, Supersport has a solid variety of motorsport content on offer. Things could be better though (WEC would be nice), so we're glad to see that Supersport has announced that it will be airing all the Indycar 2018 races live. "SuperSport will be broadcasting all 17 Indycar races live this year, starting with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on 11 March," the company noted on its Facebook page. Don't have Supersport? Well, the series uploads races to its YouTube channel a short while after. It's unclear if this will...

  • Intel is using drones, AI to make better race drivers, races

Motorsport is one of the most data-heavy disciplines out there, as sensor-rigged cars generate a ton of info during a race. But Intel thinks it can improve races for both drivers and viewers, using drones and AI to do so. The company used CES 2018 to announce a collaboration with the Ferrari Challenge North America racing series, to "enhance the motorsports experience for spectators and illustrate the potential of artificial intelligence for transforming the future of motorsports". What does the PR-speak actually mean, though? Benefits for drivers, fans? AI, combined with aerial footage from drones, will be used to generate deeper insight into...

  • Nvidia teams up with Uber, VW for self-driving, AI tech

Graphics company Nvidia is no stranger to self-driving technology, having previously shown off its DRIVE range of chips for automotive use. Now, the company has made several important announcements ahead of the CES 2018 expo. Nvidia used its pre-CES keynote address to confirm that its upcoming DRIVE Xavier chipset will be delivered to customers this quarter. Two Xavier chipsets form part of a larger Nvidia platform for AI and self-driving, dubbed Pegasus. The Pegasus platform will enable so-called level-five autonomous driving, allowing auto brands to ditch steering wheels, pedals and other controls. In even bigger news, Nvidia also announced a few...

  • Alfa Romeo returns to F1, teaming up with Sauber

Alfa Romeo has confirmed its involvement with the Sauber F1 team next year as title sponsor and technical partner. The move, part of a multi-year deal, marks the first time in over 30 years that the brand is involved in F1, having been a team and engine manufacturer. "The partnership, which includes a strategic, commercial and technological cooperation between Alfa Romeo and the Sauber F1 Team, will enable the exchange of engineering and technical know-how, and provide new opportunities for the two organisations within Formula One and beyond," read a release on Sauber's website. "From 2018, the team will be known as...

  • 6 motorsport championships you can watch on YouTube

Formula One, MotoGP and the World Endurance Championship are all restricted to TV channels and/or subscription-based services. Heck, in F1's case, you can't even get a streaming plan (although that's set to change). But you don't have to pay cash to get your motorsport on, as these championship series stream on YouTube. FIA Formula 3 European Championship Euro F3 is widely considered to be one of the most competitive motorsport franchises around, featuring a host of talented young drivers. Some of the more prominent drivers in this year's field include Mick Schumacher (son of Michael), Ferrari Academy drivers Callum Ilott and Guanyu Zhou and McLaren...

  • Virtual racer wins McLaren F1 testing gig

The GT Academy series proved that gamers could be professional sportscar racers, but what about F1? Well, McLaren has crowned the winner of its World's Fastest Gamer contest. The competition resulted in 25-year-old former karting champion Rudy van Buren winning a role as one of McLaren F1's simulator drivers for the 2018 season. McLaren whittled the contestants down from 30 000, eventually hitting 12 for the Finals Week at their Woking headquarters. The week would see contestants driving around the likes of Interlagos, Indianapolis, Circuit de la Sarthe and Suzuka. The deciding round saw van Buren going up against 20-year-old Freek Schothorst in a four hour...

  • F1: here’s what 2021 engine formula could look like

The current F1 engine formula is set to stay in place for a few more years, but the V6 turbo hybrid era is set for a significant change come 2021. F1 and the FIA have revealed a proposal for the 2021 engine regulations, sticking with the 1.6 litre V6 turbo power unit, but increasing the engine running speed by 3000rpm to improve sound. In the hybrid department, the MGU-H energy recovery system has been given the boot under the new proposal. Instead, we get a more powerful MGU-K system. The former system harvests exhaust gases to spin up the turbo engine, while the...

  • F1 owners plan streaming service in 2018 – report

Formula One fans have been clamouring for a streaming service for quite some time, enabling them to potentially cut the cord. Now, F1 owners Liberty Media have reportedly confirmed that they'll be launching a streaming service in 2018. F1 commercial chief Sean Bratches told Autosport that live-streaming from races as well as extra offerings would be made available for the start of next season. These extra offerings include behind-the-scenes footage and "extra" data. "We have an obligation to our fans, quite candidly, to ensure that they are able to access our content in any means they want," Bratches was quoted as saying. Don't...

  • Mercedes has an F1-inspired concept with a 25km electric range

Mercedes has shown off a radical concept car at the Frankfurt International Motor Show, heavily inspired by its F1 cars. The two-seater Mercedes-AMG Project ONE vehicle produces over 1000hp, delivers an eight-speed manual gearbox and reaches a speed of over 350 km/h. "The high-performance plug-in hybrid drive system of the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE comes directly from Formula 1, and was realised in close cooperation with the motorsport experts of Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains in Brixworth," read a press statement on the automaker's website. As for the actual details, you're looking at a 1.6 litre V6 turbo engine combined with four electric motors. "One...

  • Video: Audi TT flies through the air in incredible Sandton car crash

As an avid motorsport fan, I've seen a fair number of ludicrous crashes in my time. But nothing compares to this road accident caught on tape in Sandton. A female driver believed to be in her 20s, was piloting an Audi TT when the vehicle veered off the road Sunday morning. The car then became airborne, slammed into a roadside signpost, and came to rest at an adjacent wall. The entire shunt, which took place on the corner of Rivonia and Marion Road, Sandton, is over in less than four seconds. Arrive Alive tweeted a video of the unfolding accident to its official...

  • Volvo to deliver eclipse viewers for your sunroof (in USA)

An upcoming eclipse is set to envelope a large part of the United States in darkness on 21 August. And if you've got a sunroof (and are in the eclipse's path), then it seems like a pretty neat way to view the celestial event. Now, Volvo has revealed eclipse viewers that attach to the XC60's sunroof, so you don't necessarily need to don a pair of eclipse glasses. The company added that it'll be shipping the eclipse viewers to "select Volvo retailers" in the eclipse's path of totality. So that means Oregon, Idaho, Nebraska, Missouri and South Carolina. "The XC60 Panoramic Moonroof...

  • Gallery: Toyota’s Aygo X-Cite is a cutesy city car with a drop-top

The Toyota Aygo is supposed to be a small city car for trendy urban kids, but the Japanese company has taken it one step further. Dubbed the X-Cite, the revised model has been converted into a drop-top seemingly just in time for the South African Summer. "The X-Cite offers South African buyers the option of an affordable, open-top compact hatch with its retractable canvas roof model," the company notes in a press release. "Finished in black, the full-length X-Cite canvas roof is factory-fitted and electrically-operated with a switch next to the map light control in the headlining." For petrolheads, the X-Cite features a...

  • Watch: Magnussen’s foul-mouthed comeback to Hulkenberg

The Hungarian Grand Prix was a pretty entertaining race, as Sebastian Vettel held off Kimi Raikkonen and the two Mercedes drivers for the win. However, it could be argued that the best moment happened in the interview area with Haas driver Kevin Magnussen and Renault's Nico Hulkenberg. The actual race saw Magnussen leave no room for the Renault driver, forcing Hulkenberg to run off the track. The German driver made no secret of his feelings, approaching Magnussen as he was conducting an interview after the race. "Once again, the most unsporting driver on the grid," Hulkenberg told the Dane. "Suck my balls..." Magnussen...
