  • Watch: Moto2 rider suffers horrible crash (he’s been discharged)

Motorcycle racing isn't for the faint of heart, with little protection and the threat of a high-side flip being constant. And the bike bit hard on Saturday, as Moto2 rider Lorenzo Baldassarri experienced a terrible crash during qualifying at Assen. Baldassarri suffered a high-side, ragdolling in the air before being hit in the back of the head and neck by his own bike. The session was subsequently red-flagged and the Italian taken to hospital. Check out the crash below. The rider was diagnosed with a bad concussion as well as a fractured ankle, according to Motorsport.com. He's since been discharged from hospital. As for qualifying,...

  • Le Mans 2017: Porsche claims win in race of attrition

You know it's a crazy endurance race when a slower class of car is leading the race and in with a remote shot of winning. And that's exactly what happened at this past weekend's Le Mans 24 Hours. But it was not to be, as the #2 Porsche car took the chequered flag in first. It was looking like Toyota would finally break their duck this weekend, after the heartache of last year's event. In fact, qualifying saw Kamui Kobayashi's Toyota break the all-time lap record by roughly two seconds. And the race initially saw the Toyotas streak ahead, leaving...

  • Lamborghini Aventador S hits SA, and I obviously can afford it

The Lamborghini Aventador S has arrived in South Africa, delivering some pretty mean performance for those that can afford it. The supercar packs a 740hp naturally aspirated V12 engine, being capable of 0-100km/h in 2.9 seconds and a top speed of 350km/h. Otherwise, the car also packs customisable driving modes, a four-wheel drive and steering system, and reworked aerodynamics for an increase in downforce. The big question is the price though, and the Aventador S has a R7.4-million (R7 488 000, to be exact) price tag. As for local availability? The car is available in Johannesburg, with "Cape Town planned for the end of...

  • Watch: Kelvin van der Linde gambles to win Nurburgring 24-Hour

It was a massive weekend for motorsport, with the Monaco Grand Prix, NASCAR's Coca Cola 600 and Indycar's Indy 500 being some of the more prominent events. However, the Nurburgring 24-Hour race also took place this past weekend, and South Africa's own Kelvin van der Linde took the chequered flag, as part of the Audi Sport Team Land squad. Van der Linde's teammates included Markus 'I led my only F1 race' Winkelhock, Christopher Mies and Connor de Phillippi. Kelvin van der Linde endured a super slow pit-stop, but it all paid off in the end Driving the number 29 Audi R8 LMS, van der...

  • Indy 500: how did Scott Dixon walk away from this? [Video]

The 2017 Indy 500 was a rollercoaster affair, but this was almost literally the case for pole-sitter Scott Dixon. The Kiwi endured one of the most jaw-dropping crashes ever seen in motorsport this year, after fellow racer Jay Howard hit the wall and bounced back across the track. Dixon then flew over the top of Howard's car, landing almost upside-down on a wall before the car broke in half, rolled several times and came to a rest. Fortunately, both drivers were relatively unscathed in the incident -- a testament to the safety cell of the DW12 chassis. The view from second place finisher...

  • Indy 500: Sato pips Castroneves, Alonso’s Honda blows

The 2017 Indy 500 was an extra special one for F1 fans, as McLaren's Fernando Alonso joined the field in a McLaren-Honda Andretti car. However, the Spaniard was left with the cruelest of fates in the closing stages of the race, as his Honda engine blew with 20 laps to go. He had been running inside the top ten at the time, having pulled off several passes. Alonso's debut at Indy made for a fantastic performance though, having swapped the lead with teammate Alexander Rossi and making some impressive moves throughout the course of the race. The McLaren driver's engine failure wasn't...

  • Alonso wouldn’t be first: these rookies won Indy 500

Pole position for Scott Dixon means that he's in the prime starting spot for the Indy 500 on Sunday. However, it's not uncommon for lower-ranked qualifiers to win the race. But what about rookies winning the big one? Surely it's out of the question? Well, not so fast, as nine drivers have won the race at their first attempt. And with four rookies in the field this year (Jack Harvey, Fernando Alonso, Ed Jones and Zach Veach), we take a look at some of the more recent examples. Juan Pablo Montoya (2000) The Colombian may have won the 2015 Indy 500, but...

  • General Motors to pull out of South Africa, Isuzu to step in

General Motors (GM) has announced that it is "transforming" its business globally and, as a result, will be pulling out of South Africa. The company said it will "phase out manufacturing and sales of Chevrolet vehicles subject to regulatory approvals". The company adds that following the sale of Opel to the PSA Group, it will work with the new owner to formulate a strategy for Opel in SA. The move will however see Isuzu stepping up to the plate, purchasing GM's light commercial vehicle manufacturing facilities in Port Elizabeth. "With its proud heritage, Isuzu will deepen its presence in the country with...

  • As Indy 500 approaches, a look at that insane Indy Lights finish

The Indy 500 is just over a week away, and the race is infamous for having some jaw-dropping finishes over the years. There was obviously Alex Rossi's lift-and-coast to victory last year and Ryan Hunter-Reay just pipping Helio Castroneves to the line in 2014. But the 2013 Indy Lights race might be the most dramatic one yet. The IndyCar feeder series traditionally holds the Freedom 100 race at the track, taking place on the Friday before the Indy 500. And the 2013 running saw a four-wide finish, with the winner being ahead by a mere 0.0026 seconds. It marks one of...

  • Audi, Volvo models will soon run a full version of Android

We've already seen Apple's CarPlay and Google's Android Auto power in-car infotainment systems. But what about a smartphone platform powering the car itself? Well, Google has announced that Audi and Volvo will be developing cars with a full fledged version of Android built in. "That means your car's built-in infotainment system could allow you to control your air conditioning, sunroof, and windows, find the nearest restaurant with Google Maps, listen to Spotify or NPR, or just ask your Google Assistant for help -- even when you leave your phone behind," Google wrote on its blog. Google will be previewing the platform at...

  • GIF: Fernando Alonso kills two birds with one car during Indycar test

Fernando Alonso stepped into his McLaren Honda Andretti for the first time yesterday, attracting scores of YouTube views for his first ever Indycar test. The double F1 champion stepped into the cockpit as part of his rookie orientation programme, running laps at increasingly faster speeds in order to pass the test. Alonso's performance was praised by 1978 F1 champion and Indycar icon Mario Andretti, who said his performance "couldn't be smoother". However, it wasn't quite without incident, as the Spaniard accidentally killed two birds during the test. Or rather, he didn't so much kill them as make them turn into a puff...

  • 5 rare video game cars you can’t afford

When it comes to video games, there are plenty of opportunities for car manufacturers to design special cars or have artists create something unique that fits into the universe. Sometimes, real-world prototypes of these vehicles are created for marketing or PR stunts. Below is a list of five rare cars that are either included in video games, or have been inspired by them. Audi R8 (Final Fantasy XV) The release of the long-awaited Final Fantasy XV (initially called Final Fantasy Versus XIII) has been a resounding success for Square Enix (SE). One of the weirder collaborations to promote the game -- besides...

  • Watch: we test-drive the Ford Focus RS

Between the six-speed gearbox, 2.3 litre turbo engine and ridiculous acceleration, there's quite a lot to like about the Ford Focus RS. It's certainly a pocket rocket of note, but is it a perfect ride? We got to spend the Easter Weekend with Ford's speedster to figure that out. Look out for a text-based rundown in the coming days, but our test-drive impressions are available in video form for your viewing pleasure. Check it out below...
